In the beginning half of my academic career, I focused solely on Computer Science. I took part in a myriad of programming classes, competitions, jobs and clubs – which I thoroughly enjoyed!
However, it was my time as an undergraduate, research assistant in the Smart Home Lab that marked the beginning of my transition from a software engineer to a User Experience Designer.
My starter project in the Smart Home Lab had me working with Pam, a senior citizen who is quadriplegic. I used a mountable netbook and designed an interface for her to easily traverse through her activities of daily living by using her voice to dictate notes, setup appointments, and control her smart appliances.
Having to take an empathic look at my code for the first time, after solely focusing on theory and programming to get the right answer/desired algorithm, left a lasting impression on me to always be mindful of who is using my finished product, and what their experience would be.
Ever since my projects in the lab, my proceeding education and work history now offer a mixture of skills and knowledge in computer science, software engineering, visual design, web design, web development, digital media, and research. I am always seeking to learn more and hope to get further certified in UX.
I have collaborated in teams of varied sizes and profession combinations, to design solutions for clients such as Carnival Corporation, Texas Business Law, Westgate Resorts, United Nations Development Programme, Fly Jamaica Airways and many more.
